Ethical Breeding Is Breeding Out Ichthyosis
Years ago, I shared my life with a Golden Retriever named Rio who suffered from ichthyosis. For a long time, it felt like the condition stole my best friend—and my wallet.
What should have been a carefree Golden Retriever life became a constant battle against flaky skin, recurring ear problems, hot spots, odor, and the ongoing expense of trying to keep him comfortable. Nobody brings home a Golden Retriever hoping to spend years managing a genetic skin disorder, but that’s exactly the reality many families face.
Thankfully, with the guidance of my veterinarian, I eventually learned that managing the condition didn’t always require expensive treatments. What mattered most was consistency.
Managing Rio’s Ears
Rio’s ears were particularly prone to chronic yeast and bacterial infections. My routine started with witch hazel applied to a cotton ball. Using my pinky, I would gently remove debris while helping dry excess moisture from the ear canal. After cleaning, I applied Zymox Ear Solution with 1% hydrocortisone. The hydrocortisone helped calm inflammation while the formula addressed the bacterial and yeast overgrowth that commonly contributed to his flare-ups.
This simple and affordable routine helped us stay ahead of many ear problems before they became severe.
Managing Rio’s Skin
His skin required the same consistent attention. Depending on how he was doing, I bathed him weekly or every other week using a chlorhexidine shampoo. After each bath, I made sure he was completely dry before applying a thin layer of coconut oil to rough or irritated areas.
The secret was never some miracle product. It was consistency. Keeping him clean, dry, and addressing problems before they became major issues made all the difference.
Nutrition Matters
Nutrition also played an important role. I supplemented his diet with omega-3 fatty acids from sardines and fish oil while adding fresh foods such as eggs, lean meats, and bone broth. Combined with his bathing routine, these simple dietary additions helped support healthier skin and coat condition.
The Lesson Rio Taught Me
Even with all of these efforts, Rio taught me an important lesson: no dog should have to inherit this condition in the first place.
For some families, ichthyosis can feel like it has stolen the Golden Retriever they thought they were bringing home. The dog who should be swimming in the ocean, splashing through streams, and rolling carefree in the mud instead spends far too much time dealing with itchy skin, ear infections, hot spots, and discomfort.
While affected dogs can still live happy and fulfilling lives, I came to believe that the real solution is prevention.
How We Break the Cycle
When the time came to bring another Golden Retriever into my life, I made certain that both parents had been genetically tested and confirmed clear of the mutation responsible for ichthyosis. Over the years, I have encouraged countless other owners and breeders to do the same.
That experience ultimately shaped the philosophy behind Magnificent Golden Retrievers.
At Magnificent Golden Retrievers, all breeding dogs undergo genetic testing prior to breeding. We do not produce puppies carrying the genetic mutation responsible for ichthyosis. Through careful selection of breeding pairs, no puppy produced by our program will inherit even a single copy of the mutation.
This is how we break the cycle.
Not by accepting ichthyosis as normal. Not by simply managing it after the fact. By preventing it from being passed to the next generation.
That is what ethical breeding looks like.
