Homemade Recipes are more nutritional and less expensive than feeding canned wet and kibble dog food
Chicken Veggie Normandy over Kibble
This protein-rich home creation provides your growing puppy with balanced amino acids, joint and bone support, healthy digestion, and long-term immune strength.
1) Identify and obtain the best deal on frozen chicken leg quarters (better yet substitute whole chicken). Buy as much as you can handle and store in freezer for future batches. Your pup will have an even bigger appetite later
2) Obtain Member’s Mark brand pre-cut frozen Broccoli Normandy from Sam’s Club (“Broccoli Melody” if shopping at Costco). This mixed bag of broccoli florets, cauliflower florets, and crinkle-cut carrots help round out this food creation. If you have freezer space, purchase a case or more of this inexpensive ingredient, as it will be key to most every protein-rich creation you prepare for your growing golden.
3) Thaw until the chicken quarters can be separated from each other. Then add the pieces to a large stock pot and fill with water about 3/4 the way up the chicken. Cover the pot.
4) Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to medium low. Simmer for 1 hour.
5) While allowing your stockpot to cool, microwave cook the appropriate amount of bags of Broccoli Melody. Microwave up to two bags at a time at 7 minutes. The appropriate amount will be to your eyeball and dependent on how much chicken you’ve prepared. I typically cook 20 lb of chicken leg quarters at a time and use four bags to that.
6) Allow your stockpot to cool and then easily debone the meat. Only remove and discard the actual bone. The broth, meat, tendon, skin and fat are all of nutritional value and is what makes this creation better for your growing pup and adult than canned food. Even bones are of GREAT nutritional value EXCEPT FOR cooked bones. *When cooked bones are crushed by the dog’s teeth, the bone can splinter into sharp pieces and end up injuring the lining of the digestive system. So DO NOT feed them cooked bones, ever*
7) This is the time that you can add Beef Gelatin Powder and stir in to thicken the contents of the stock pot. Beef gelatin powder is a natural, nutrient-dense supplement that supports healthy growth and joint strength in both puppies and adult dogs. It’s rich in collagen, the protein that forms the foundation of connective tissues like cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and skin.
8) Stir in your steamed bags of Broccoli Normandy and then serve an ample amount of your Chicken Veggie Normandy over kibble. *We’ve been feeding Member’s Mark brand kibble for years and trust it as a source of protein for our pack. It’s never done us wrong, it’s not overpriced, and it’s readily available.
9) Add a dollop of plain yogurt or cottage cheese

A nutritious topper idea for growing golden retriever puppies and adults
This wholesome recipe combines lean fish, shrimp, and vegetables to enhance mealtime with natural protein, vitamins, and minerals. It’s gentle on the stomach, supports muscle growth, and boosts appetite for picky eaters
Ingredients:
-
Tilapia fillets
-
Cod fillets
-
Shrimp (peeled and de-shelled)
-
1 bag broccoli medley (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots)
-
1 bag cauliflower rice (fresh or frozen)
-
1 tablespoon melted coconut oil or olive oil
Instructions:
-
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Lightly coat a baking dish with coconut or olive oil.
-
Add tilapia, cod, and shrimp in an even layer.
-
Add the broccoli medley and cauliflower rice on top.
-
Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes to retain moisture.
-
Uncover and bake another 15 minutes, or until fish flakes easily and vegetables are tender.
-
Pinch at the base of the shrimp tails to pop off the very end. It contains a barb that is potentially problematic when ingested. If the rest of the shell and legs are soft after cooking, these are generally ok for them to eat and are very nutritious, as it contains chitin. Chitin is a natural compound that can be converted into glucosamine, supporting developing joint health and cartilage.
- Let cool completely before serving over a quality kibble.
Serving Suggestion:
Spoon a small portion over your puppy’s regular kibble as a healthy topper. Store extra portions in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze individual servings for later use.
