1. Next Steps for Reserved Families

Jump to:  Health ProtocolsScarlet × Rio litter announcement - Magnificent Golden RetrieversThank you for securing your spot on our Reservation List.
If you were fortunate enough to be confirmed for our autumn-conceived litters, here’s what to expect as we approach the due dates and whelping of puppies from Scarlet × Rio, as well as timing-to-be-determined puppies from Sasha × Kruse.

Step 1

Puppy Selection — Begins January 20

Starting January 20, families will be invited in order of their reservation number to visit and meet the Scarlet × Rio puppies. Pups will be approximately six weeks old at that time.

You may choose your puppy during your visit. If you prefer to wait, your reservation will carry over to the next Sasha × Kruse litter (date to be announced).

Due at selection: Security deposit to hold your puppy until pickup day.

Step 2

Go-Home at 8 Weeks (Scarlet’s pups = February 3)

Puppies go home at eight (8) weeks. For Scarlet’s pups, February 3 makes 8 weeks old. We are flexible with the day and time you choose for take home day. At that time, payment in full is due.

Timing is always subject to each puppy’s readiness and veterinary guidance.
We will confirm exact pickup windows with you as we get closer.

Health Protocols We Follow

Each puppy’s health is supported through structured vaccination, deworming, and parasite screening programs built on proven veterinary principles.

Deworming Schedule

We use Pyrantel Pamoate initially at two and four weeks and then Fenbendazole 10% (Safe-Guard) for 3 consecutive days per round at six and eight weeks. These standard prophylactic treatments ensure your pup gets off to a great start growing. Giardia screening via microscopy is performed to verify pup is clear before go home day.

Age (Week) Action Notes
2 one dose pyrantel pamoate Dosage is always by current body weight.
4 one dose pyrantel pamoate Monitor stool and appetite.
6 Deworm Days 1–3 w/fenbendazole Monitor. Microscopic analysis just prior to 6 wks
8 Deworm Days 1–3 w/fenbendazole Final in-house series before go-home. Microscopic analysis just prior to 8 wks

Giardia Screening Before Go-Home

Each puppy is screened for Giardia via direct fecal microscopy prior to release. Any findings are addressed and documented so every puppy departs healthy.

Vaccine Protocol

  • Premium vaccine selected: Nobivac® EDGE DAPPv + L4 (#30384-415), 0.5 mL, sourced from Revival Animal Health.
  • Coverage (DAPPv): Distemper, Adenovirus-1 (Hepatitis), Adenovirus-2, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus (including common field strains).
  • Coverage (L4 Leptospirosis): Four Leptospira serovars — L. canicola, L. grippotyphosa, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, L. pomona.
  • Preservative: Thimerosal-free.
  • Route: Subcutaneous injection.
Why we include Leptospirosis (L4) in Hawaii: Leptospirosis is a realistic risk in tropical environments. Dogs are typically exposed through contact with contaminated soil or standing/fresh water (often via wildlife/rodents and other animals). Hawaii’s warm temperatures and frequent wet conditions can increase opportunity for exposure—especially in muddy areas, puddles, streams, and runoff after rain.

Timing & Doses

  • First dose at eight weeks old: Nobivac® EDGE DAPPv + L4 given at ~8 weeks before go-home (opt-out available when you have a preferred veterinarian).
  • Second dose by 12 weeks old (recommended by veterinary guidelines): Nobivac® EDGE DAPPv + L4 offered to reserved families at 12 weeks old (exactly 4 weeks after the first dose).
  • Cost: the second dose is available through us for the cost of the vaccine only (nominal). You may also have your veterinarian administer the second—timing still matters.
Manufacturer standard: Please understand the following: with Nobivac® EDGE DAPPv + L4, the manufacturer considers puppies fully vaccinated after two appropriately administered doses given on schedule (dose 2 administered 2–4 weeks after dose 1). Our program is a two-dose primary series (8 weeks, then 12 weeks). CONSULT with your veterinarian about the third dose, typically given at or after 16 weeks of age. You should then be concerned about your puppy’s immune system at 12+ months old, when you can have a titer test easily done to verify the core vaccines are offering enough protection. Titer testing can be relatively easy to administer throughout the dog’s life prior to any routine, subsequent booster vaccinations. See next..

Titer Testing

  • Titer testing at 12 months old (or earlier): At approximately one year of age, we encourage families to allow us the opportunity to obtain a blood sample and submit it to Hemopet Hemolife Laboratory where experts in canine immunology will analyze the blood serum for Distemper, Parvovirus, and Leptospirosis titer levels.
  • Purpose: This will show whether your Golden Retriever is still protected against the aforementioned diseases and help determine whether a booster is actually needed, preventing potential harm from overzealous routine vaccination. Overvaccination can indeed be harmful to the canine immune system, causing immune system dysregulation that leads to chronic inflammation, hypersensitivity and allergies, and other immune-mediated conditions. Thus the reason to seek titer testing at about 12 months old.
  • We’d be happy to handle it for you as soon as early as 6 weeks after the second dose.
  • Cost: Testing for the aforementioned primary titers currently is ~$150 plus overnight temperature sensitive shipping.

Vaccine Documentation Policy

We provide accurate, veterinarian-standard documentation for every vaccine administered. These detailed health records allow your veterinarian to confidently continue your puppy’s vaccination series.

Each record specifies the vaccine manufacturer, lot number, expiration date, and date of administration, ensuring full traceability and transparency.

While we recommend a consistent series for best protection, your veterinarian may adjust timing or product selection based on their preferred practice. Our documentation gives them the information they need to do so confidently.

Vaccine Storage & Power Reliability

The storage temperature of vaccines like the ones used by M.G.R. is of crucial importance to be kept stable and within the manufacturer’s storage temperature range. Upon vaccine delivery from Revival Animal Health, temperature probes are used to test the internal temperature of the Styrofoam packaging before it’s opened. This is to verify the vaccines are within the recommended temperature range upon arrival.  If not stored properly, the vaccines will lose their effectiveness. This is why we went above and beyond for you by investing more into our vaccine storage protocols. Your vet can confidently count as valid the vaccines administered by M.G.R.🌡

  • Temperature of vaccines tested for correct temperature range upon delivery from vaccine distributor.
  • Dedicated, temperature-controlled vaccine refrigerator with continuous Bluetooth monitoring.
  • Backed by a high-capacity power station that can run the refrigerator for up to two days during a power outage.
  • Solar panel and gasoline generator on hand to recharge the power station for extended outages (cold-chain is preserved).

Schedule Your Second Dose

Contact us to coordinate your puppy’s second Nobivac (5 way + lepto) dose four weeks after the first. A second dose is required for full protection against the deadly parvovirus and other common diseases. A third dose very well maybe recommended by your vet at or after 16 weeks of age. Please make contact with a veterinarian of your choice to discuss this with them. If you’re not sure of who to call, I know of several great clinics in various locations on Oahu and would be glad to recommend one close to you.
